Understanding interference experiments with polarized light through photon trajectories

چکیده
Bohmian mechanics allows to visualize and understand the quantum-mechanical behavior of massive particles in terms of trajectories. As shown by Bialynicki-Birula, Electromagnetism also admits a hydrodynamical formulation when the existence of a wave function for photons (properly defined) is assumed. This formulation thus provides an alternative interpretation of optical phenomena in terms of photon trajectories, whose flow yields a pictorial view of the evolution of the electromagnetic energy density in configuration space. This trajectory-based theoretical framework is considered here to study and analyze the outcome from Young-type diffraction experiments within the context of the Arago-Fresnel laws. More specifically, photon trajectories in the region behind the two slits are obtained in the case where the slits are illuminated by a polarized monochromatic plane wave. Expressions to determine electromagnetic energy flow lines and photon trajectories within this scenario are provided, as well as a procedure to compute them in the particular case of gratings totally transparent inside the slits and completely absorbing outside them. As is shown, the electromagnetic energy flow lines obtained allow to monitor at each point of space the behavior of the electromagnetic energy flow and, therefore, to evaluate the effects caused on it by the presence (right behind each slit) of polarizers with the same or different polarization axes. This leads to a trajectory-based picture of the Arago-Fresnel laws for the interference of polarized light. Email address: [email protected] (A. S. Understanding quantum polarized-light interference experiments through electromagnetic energy flow lines
General expressions to obtain the electromagnetic energy flow lines behind interference gratings are derived in the case where the incident light consists of a polarized monochromatic plane wave. These flow lines show how the electromagnetic energy redistributes in space (behind the grating) until the Fraunhofer regime is reached, thus providing an interpretation based on photon paths for the p...
متن کاملQuasi interference of perpendicularly polarized guided modes observed with a photon scanning tunneling microscope.
The simultaneous detection of TE- as well as TM-polarized light with a photon scanning tunneling microscope leads to a quasi-interference pattern of these mutually perpendicular polarized fields. This interference pattern has been observed in the optical field distribution as a function of both position and wavelength. Comparison of experimental data with simulations confirms the interference o...
متن کاملClassical two-slit interference effects in double photoionization of molecular hydrogen at high energies.
Recent experiments on double photoionization of H2 with photon energies between 160 and 240 eV have revealed body-frame angular distributions that suggest classical two-slit interference effects may be present when one electron carries most of the available energy and the second electron is not observed. We report precise quantum mechanical calculations that reproduce the experimental findings....
متن کاملExperiments with Downconverted Photons: the Quantum Eraser
This experiment investigates properties of light at the single photon level. We generate pairs of 915.8-nm photons through parametric downconversion by sending a beam of 457.9-nm light through a BBO crystal. These downconverted photons are detected using two avalanche photodiodes. We then create a distinguishable characteristic in one arm of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer by adding a half wavepl...
متن کاملLab2: Single Photon Interference
The wave-particle duality of light was verified by multi and single photon interference both through Young’s double slit and Mach-Zehnder interferometer. In these two sets of experiments, the interference in the single photon level is the same as that at multi photons level with long enough exposure time. In the Mach-Zehnder interferometer, the “whichpath” information can be identified by measu...
